Choosing the Right Calcium for Post-Whelping: Whelp Wise vs Calci-Power

​We discuss why calcium is vital during labour and lactation, but only if it’s in a tummy-safe, bioavailable form and given at the right dose, for the right duration. That’s why we've developed two Calcium supplements for breeders:

Why calcium actually matters so much

Once your girl goes into labour and throughout lactation, her body’s calcium demand skyrockets. Calcium is crucial for:

• Strong uterine contractions during whelping.
• Milk production for newborn puppies.
• Nerve and muscle function for both mum and pups.

But here’s the catch: the wrong design of calcium (like chalky calcium carbonate often used in cheap supplements) can upset tummies and isn’t well absorbed. Worse still, supplementing for the wrong duration, and starting during pregnancy can actually increase the risk of eclampsia, as it interferes with her parathyroid regulation. Not to mention, giving the wrong dose, and giving too little achieves nothing - leaving your girl wide open to eclampsia.

That’s why design of the Calcium matter just just as much as the duration and dose of supplementation.

​Our 'CNC approach': bioavailable & breeder-safe

​Calci-Power: powdered calcium in bulk tubs

• Format: 350 g tub of pure powder
• Calcium type: gluconate, pure and additive-free.
• Best for: larger dogs, fussier eaters, or breeders who want a bulk format that saves time and money.
• Ease of use: 1 level teaspoon ≈ 3 grams. Daily guideline = 1 teaspoon per 5kg bodyweight (split into 2–3 servings). For a big girl, that’s just a couple of tablespoons a day instead of dozens of capsules.
• Cost effective: compared to capsules, Calci-Power works out at nearly half the daily cost for large breeds or breeders with several girls.

​The 3D Rule of Supplements

Whether you use capsules or powder, the key is following my 3D Rule:

• Dose: Give enough to make a difference, carefully calculated for your bitch’s weight. Too little and it won’t help - lulling you into a false sense of security. 
• Duration: Use calcium at the right time — from active labour through lactation — not during pregnancy. Continue until puppies are weaned.
• Design: Choose a formulation that’s clean, gentle, and bioavailable (like citrate or gluconate), not cheap chalky fillers.
