How to Improve Your Dog’s Diet Without Causing Digestive Chaos

15/12/2025

If you have ever thought, “I know their food needs changing… but I’m scared, what if I get it wrong or make things worse?”, you are not alone.

This is one of the most common things I hear from owners, especially when their dog isn't quite right.

Because when you have lived through loose stools, flare-ups, and reactions to tiny changes, the fear of making things worse becomes intense.

So people freeze. They stay on a food they do not trust because it feels safer than rocking the boat.

But staying still, is still a decision. And for some dogs, it quietly allows problems to build

The truth? Food changes are not the problem...
Chaos is.

Most symptomatic dogs already have a stressed gut. So when food changes are done quickly, randomly, or layered with other changes, the gut struggles.

That does not mean change is wrong. It means how you change matters.

If you’re here because your dog keeps flaring and you’re scared of making things worse, this background may help ease some of that fear: Why Some Dogs Flare Up on “Normal” Food And Why It’s Not Bad Luck

The safest routes of change

Option 1: Gradual Improvement

This is best option for dogs who are otherwise happy and healthy, but could do with some improvements (like most of us humans!). It is well reported that by reducing the amount of ultraprocessed food in your dog's diet by just 20%, you reduce their risk of chronic, life limiting diseases including diabetes, cancer, obesity and more. So it's an active step that all owners should be taking, by using this gradual improvement method.

In this route, you aim to improve quality whilst reducing ultraprocessing in your dog's diet - considering all aspects of their life from their daily food, chews, to treats, to supplements. You introduce these changes relatively slowly, making one change at a time, usually with gut support like soothing slippery elm and a probiotic.

Option 2: Structured Reset

This is typically the better option for dogs who aren't exactly thriving - they flare regularly, react unpredictably, or are stuck in treatment cycles. A carefully considered change over plan should be followed - slowly introducing a 'novel food' made from a new type of protein that the dog has not encountered before. This method requires a great level of understanding on the manufacturing method of their current food (and new food) along with the dog's clinical history of flare ups. So this method is typically done following the guidance of a canine nutrition coach, so you can be sure you're removing as many variables as possible and getting things right (and not making things worse!).

By introducing novel proteins, and lesser processed foods in a carefully considered routine - triggers can be identified more easily. The process can take as little as a few weeks, or even a few months depending on how well the dog copes with change and how many triggers are avoided or identified. This process allows you to carefully reduce the amount of 'pressure' on the dog's digestive system and immune system, giving the gut time and space to stabilise.

The most common 'backfire'

The one thing that most owners do when they're trying to change their dog's food, nearly always backfires on them.

They change everything at once: swap out to a new food, new treats, new supplements, new chews, a new routine, and maybe even a new vets for good measure.

So when the gut reacts, your then left picking up sloppy poo again and mopping infected ears. But you can't figure out why, thinking "but I've swapped to a better food, so why are things worse?". Panic hits, and everything gets blamed.

This is not because change is bad. It is because the change wasn't the right kind. It was probably chaotic.

Understanding labels makes it easier

Really considering what ingredients go into your dog's bowl certainly makes it easier to make better choices. Understanding what dog food labels are really saying makes this process far less intimidating too - but if that feels overwhelming, start here: How to Read a Dog Food Label Without Being Misled
